The Do it Yourself Virgin - A Review

I recently saw the blog thedoityourselfvirgin.com and I think it's great. The site has some very doable (is that a word?) projects for a diy wannabe like me. There's some quality instruction and videos on the site and an emphasis on thriftiness. That's important with the price of materials and labor these days. Another unique thing about thedoityourselfvirgin.com is that the blogger shares mistakes and fixes of her projects. There's good exposure to different repair techniques as a number of different projects are tackled. I want to return to thedoityourselfvirgin.com on a regular basis.

Want to Look Great - What's Hot in Plastic Surgery: Look Good Again

Body Fat Transfer
Cosmetic surgeons are making a come back by enhancing their patients appearances with techniques and products that are hot in plastic surgery like skin tightening and body fat transfer. Some of these procedures are less expensive and less invasive than the procedures done in the past. That's important in todays economy where every penny counts. For example doctors in Some California towns have offered "special pricing" on ultrasonic liposuction and breast augmentation. One doctor, a cosmetic dentist in Islip, created an online blog to better inform patients of in-office specials and educational information on dental health care for patients. Doctors are going as far as offering free DVD's and drawings to get patients back into their offices. These techniques seem to be working. Statistics show the demand for cosmetic procedures was up 9% in 2010. This shows that people want to look great and feel good about themselves again. You can be one of those people.

Look Great Again
If you're like the millions of Americans that want to lose weight but can't stick to the workout schedule, plastic surgery may be the route for you. Why spend hours sweating it out in a gym when you can get the same or better results with plastic surgery. Does it seem like no matter how much you diet and exercise yous still cant lose the fat? If you can't lose the fat why not use it to enhance other areas of your body and kill two birds with one stone? Check online for doctors that perform cosmetic procedures in your area. Most of them have websites with information on the various procedures available to you. Give them a call to set up a consultation. They'll be glad to discuss what's hot in plastic surgery and get you on your way to looking great again.

the record dish: Copper Necklace DIY

Here's something different. It's a post by a blogger named "Jameil" wearing a necklace made from copper piping that she bought at a hardware store. Jameil found the instructions for her necklace on the internet and it became a big hit with family and friends. She's also come up with quite a few great recipes. Check out a couple of them below. Just click on the "the record dish: Copper Necklace DIY" post title above to go to her website and see more of her work.

Video Games Fueling Mental Health Problems? Are Video Games Harming Your Children?

Computer, Video Games and Psychosis: Cause for Concern
By Victoria Dunckley M.D.

"I hear voices at night, and sometimes I think someone's outside my window," the 19-year-old young man informed me. "I know no one's really there, but it's still scary."

In my practice in the past six months,  no less than 5 youths have reported psychotic symptoms that were attributed to, or exacerbated by, electronic screens. As per my protocol, I always get an "e-screen" history:
  • video games
  • computer/internet use
  • cell phone use (talking, texting, streaming, and internet).
Not surprisingly, all five of these patients, ranging from 15-22 years old, were "plugged in" for six or more hours each day. Three were female and two male. After discussing e-screen's toxic influence on the brain, I recommended to each of these patients that they forego all electronic screens for at least four weeks.

Results? The three females all went cold turkey and gave up their games, laptops, and phones. All three saw their symptoms resolve completely within a month. Of the two males, one cut down screen use significantly and his hallucinations disappeared. His paranoia remained but was less severe and caused less dysfunction. The other male turned out to be severely addicted to electronic games and refused to give up video games and computers (a subject for another article entirely! Needless to say, unfortunately he continues to suffer from psychosis). Importantly, the therapeutic effects were achieved without using medication!

Electronic screens, particularly interactive ones (as opposed to passive ones, like television), increase dopamine in the brain. This effect has been demonstrated by brain scan (Koepp, 1998). This neurotransmitter is a chemical signaler in the brain's reward system, and its release is why games can be so addicting.

Perhaps more disturbing, dopamine excess in certain parts of the brain can lead to psychotic symptoms-voices, delusions, paranoia, or confusion.

Psychosis is defined by abnormal thoughts. This can involve thought content, such as hallucinations, delusions, or paranoia, or thought process (highly disorganized thinking, or feeling thoughts are "blocked"). It is typically attributed to the severely mentally ill, like schizophrenics, but can also be seen in "normal" people under extreme stress. Children in particular are more likely to hallucinate when traumatized, sleep-deprived, or over-stimulated. E-screens cause or mimic all three of these!

Take home point: Children, teens, and young adults who have unexplained hallucinations or delusions should have ALL electronic screens removed for at least 3 weeks, as part of the diagnostic process. This includes cell phones, as cell phone texting and internet use can quickly rack up hours, and most teens cannot control their usage. While this may seem extreme, drastic times cause for drastic measures. Psychosis--and treatment thereof--is serious and has long-lasting effects.

As psychiatric disorders in young people continue to explode, and evidence mounts about the toxic effects of e-screens on the developing brain, parents and clinicians would be prudent to remove this offending environmental trigger from the child's life, as part of the diagnostic process, and as one "arm" of the treatment plan.

When you start to feel conflicted about removing screens-they are so ingrained in our lives, after all-this is what I tell my patients and their parents:

"You will never regret removing video games and computer use, but you may sorely regret leaving them in place."

How Do I Fix My Credit - A Simple Way to Help Yourself

How do I fix my credit is a question that's on the minds of thousands of people during hard economic times. Lay-offs and a bad economy take a toll on a families income. Families living on the financial edge with maxed out credit, get in a dilemma trying to figure out how to pay the bills and make ends meet when they lose a job. This is how many families and individuals come to have bad credit scores. This leaves them asking the question, "How do I fix my credit"?

Americans are resilient and resourceful but it can be a real bear to pay the bills if one or both of the income earners in the family lose their jobs. Some families resort to part-time and in home work to try to make ends meet. While that may work for some, this extra source of income ends up becoming living expenses for others. This leads to compounded frustration, mental and physical fatigue and even desperation. Statistics prove that money problems are one of the leading causes of divorce in the United States. This devastates families and can lead to many other problems. This is one of the many reasons it's so important to answer the question, "How do I fix my credit."

Unfortunately, many of us weren't taught sound financial principles as children and as young adults. Then we went out into the world and were swallowed up by quick and easy credit. Credit card companies mail credit card offers to college students that find the concept of buy now and pay later irresistible. Before long they're in debt up to their necks with no resources to pay off the debt. All of this credit card debt gets piled on top of their student loans. Students aren't the only ones that fall prey to easy credit. Some people see credit as the last resort in emergency situations. Others use it for a vacation or luxury item when they don't have cash to pay with.

The answer to the question "How do I fix my credit?" is a firm commitment to financial discipline, organization and flexibility. The best way to do it is with a proven system and with the help of an accountable partner. Something as simple as writing out a budget to keep track of your income and expenses is a good start. Fixing your credit may not be easy to do but it's certainly worth doing and worth doing right.
